A new school, a new grade.
From preschoolers to first graders.
“Will I get lost on that enormous campus?”
“Will the teachers like me? Will I make some good friends?”
“Will I do well in all the various subjects?”
Ms. Candy Yu, our psychology counsellor from the school’s “Spiritual Building” Psychological Counselling Center, gave a psychological lecture to Grade 1 students, some of whom may have shouldered many concerns at the start of their Primary School journey.
Let’s jump!
After the students did a cheerful warm-up exercise with some animals in an entertaining video, Ms. Candy briefly introduced, at a Grade 1 level, the seven functional areas of the “Spiritual Building” psychological counselling center: the “Heart Warming Room”, “Heart Whispering Valley”, “Potential Beach”, “Confident House”, “Pressure Relief Cabin”, “Catharsis Pool”, and the “Reading Corner”. This session served to help students learn that, whenever they faced challenges or issues, “Spiritual Building” was the starting point for a whole heart.
Let’s play games!
Next, through the game of crossing fingers, the children realized that as long as they manage changes calmly and face them actively, they can adapt more successfully and in a shorter time to their new identity and new school life.
Ms. Candy then shared a picture book called, “A Freshman in Grade One – Little Li”, with the students. In the story, students learn that Little Li has mixed feelings before going to primary school, but seeing that Little Li prepares for the new school both mentally and physically, the Grade 1 students began to raise their hands and remark, “I was worried that I wouldn’t know anyone or what I would do my new school, but now I am not worried at all!” Some students also replied, “I also want to be like Little Li, to think positively and take the initiative to adapt to the new semester.” More students shared that “I will learn from Little Li and make friends with those who have similar interests as me” and followed with, “I love my teachers! I love my school!”
At the end of the lecture, the children in unison all shouted eagerly,“I’m ready for primary school!” We hope that when children are faced with any changes in the future, they can carefully observe, think positively, improve constantly, and embrace a beautiful school life!
