When kindergarten students move on to primary school and enter SUIS Qingpu’s very large campus, they are filled with both anticipation and a little bit of worry in their hearts:
What will the new school be like? Will I get lost?
What will life and learning be like in primary school?
Will I be able to make good friends?
To help students adapt to primary school life as soon as possible, actively respond to new changes, and proactively adjust their frame-of-mind to embrace their new identity, our school’s “Heart House” Psychological Counseling Center’s psychology teacher, Ms. Yu Chen, led a well-being session on adapting to first-grade school life for the first-grade students.
A warm-up, and a time to get to know each other
After opening with a lively warm-up exercise from the little animals in a video, Ms. Yu briefly introduced the seven functional areas of the “Mind House” Psychological Counseling Center: “Warm Heart Room”, “Heart Language Valley”, “Potential Beach”, “Understanding House”, “Pressure-Relieving Cabin”, “Release Pool”, and “Reading Corner”. Children learned that these are the starting points for their “heart” when they want to organize their emotions.
Game experience & changes from the heart
Next, the children experienced that, through a game of crossing hands and uncrossing hands, if they can timely shift their mindset, accept the various changes of the new semester with a calm heart, and actively prepare themselves, they can adapt to their new identity and new life more quickly and smoothly.
Comics sharing & being prepared
“”Like Little Arly, I organize my backpack before bed, sleep and wake up early, looking forward to my journey to school!”
“Our school is very big. I might get lost, but I’ve already familiarized myself with some places during the freshman summer camp. I can find the library, the washroom, and the classrooms!”
“The food in our school is very delicious. My mom says I’m eating more than before.”
“On my first day, I took the initiative to make friends and found some good ones. I also made many friends on the school bus. I found that helping others can also help to make good friends!”
“The class lessons in our school are very interesting. I look forward to learning more new knowledge every day!”
At the end of the lecture, Ms. Yu gave the children three adaptability treasures: careful observation, active thinking and constant adjustment.
