The answer is – making the children fall in love with reading. Today, let’s see how we make reading fun!
Expat English teachers and the library teacher jointly planned a unique English reading marathon. The Reading Marathon kicked off the festival with great excitement. This year, middle school students creatively introduced new forms such as the Book King title competition, Book Continent class word count competition, and collective reading Stick Dragon Scales, further igniting the students’ enthusiasm and intrinsic motivation for reading. The students themselves designed a “Read around China” map, ingeniously combining reading with travel. Each class became a convoy, setting off from Shanghai, with every 1,000 words read propelling their “vehicle” forward by one kilometer.Students in different reading groups have their own reading goals, and the travel destinations and journey lengths are decided by the students themselves. During these 21 days, the library became the most desired place for students to hang out. Teachers led them to read books online and offline, and the reading assignments on the MyON platform further ignited their passion for learning.
The daily reading word count statistics conducted by the library teacher were transformed into dynamic data charts on the Seewo screens, becoming the “battle reports” that student checked every day. They clearly understood the reading situation of each grade, thus they encouraged and progressed together in their reading journey.Every day, children came to the Xiehe Hall, where the class reading word count ranking was constantly updating, creating an exciting atmosphere!
Daily Quiz
While reading, the Chinese and foreign teachers used the children’s favorite Daily Quiz format to test their reading achievements. In the corridors of each grade, there was a mystery box with some questions about books. Children could participate in the quiz, submit their answers, and teachers would randomly draw a few lucky winners each day to give small prizes, making it very interactive.
Spelling Bee
Students and teachers in grades 4-5 focused on deep reading. In the Quiz Show auditions, children competed on their reading strategies and thinking abilities through a quiz competition.
After listening to the auditions, let’s take a look at the exciting finals!
Vocabulary Challenge, Endless Fun – Grades 1-3 Spelling Bee
On the day of the competition, children dressed as characters from books filled every corner of the campus, creating a unique scenery. The dress-up themes for grades 1-3 were Fairy Tale World, Oxford Reading Tree, and Adventure Kingdom. Teachers also recommended related reading materials based on each grade’s theme and carefully selected appropriate words for the finals, preparing a very challenging secret word list for the final round.
Reading Exploration, Thought Blooming – Grades 4-5 Quiz Show
The first round of the Quiz Show was basic questions, with close scores and fierce competition, making the audience very excited. Every revealed answer brought a thunderous applause.
The second round, Open Questions, had no option hints, increasing the difficulty significantly. However, the contestants, with their thorough understanding of the books, confidently provided answers – it was impressive!
In the final round, Reading Skill-Inferring, the contestants thought deeply and cooperated in groups, fully showcasing their reasoning abilities and comprehensive skills.
Although the Grade 5 Quiz Show was held in the classroom, the intense and competitive atmosphere was no less than on a big stage.
At the same time, more than twenty reading stars from each grade took the stage to receive achievement awards for the Reading Marathon.
Class reading enthusiasts brought song and dance performances “How Far I’ll Go” and “When I Grow Up,” and a dubbing show “Zootopia” to cheer for the contestants. When the screen slowly revealed that the total grade reading word count exceeded ten million, the scene was electrifying!
Look! The teachers also dressed up as characters from fairy tales, having a lot of fun. With such interesting and dedicated teachers, we can teach happy and studious students!
Thanks to every student and teacher who participated in the Book Festival. Your enthusiasm and dedication allowed us to witness the charm of reading together. In the future, we will continue to lead the children through the colorful world of reading, ensuring that every page of their book journey at SUIS Qingpu is filled with surprises!
