Children like to make all kinds of jokes in school, and humorous jokes serve as a catalyst and sweetener for friendships, bringing people closer together and adding fun to learning experiences. However, not all jokes have the ability to make people laugh. Sometimes, jokes can unintentionally create discomfort, and malicious jokes can inflict harm on others.
On what occasions are jokes suitable?
Are all people able to receive jokes?
What kind of content can be joked about?
How do we feel about appropriate jokes?
This semester, Ms. Candy from the “Cabin of the Mind” Psychological Counseling Center delivered a series of lectures to students of all grades in our primary school, addressing various aspects of confusion found in jokes.
Students then identified the distinctions between good jokes and malicious jokes during the “joke magnifying glass” activity. Through this exercise, students gained a deeper understanding that jokes are intended to bring happiness to others in a lighthearted and humorous manner, while also acknowledging that they can vary based on individual preferences. When sharing jokes, it is important to consider the feelings of others. Additionally, it is crucial to be mindful of certain occasions that may not be suitable for joking. Lastly, it is essential to recognize that jokes should not expose people’s shortcomings or harm their self-esteem.
Next, Ms. Candy presented the results of a small survey conducted in the psychological class, revealing the four least popular jokes. In groups, students engaged in discussions regarding the impact of these jokes, how the person being joked about should respond, what bystanders should do, and what the joker should do when they realize the joke is causing harm. Based on these discussions, each student ultimately identified their own optimal coping strategy by the end of the session.
Ms. Candy concluded the lecture by reminding students to understand the importance of moderation in jokes and encouraging them to handle inappropriate situations wisely. She emphasized the significance of offering support to the person who is being joked about. Additionally, Ms. Candy presented a challenge to all participants, assigning them the following tasks.
We hope that everyone can enjoy the jokes and not suffer from them.
