SUIS Qingpu recently invited parents from all walks of life to come to the school to provide a series of unique lectures to students. These lectures aimed to broaden students’ horizons, enrich their after-school life, and allow students to gain knowledge and understanding in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
Grade 1 theme:
The Past and Present of Computer Chips
Mia’s mother from Class 1I prepared a parent class on the theme of computer chip science. What is a computer chip? How is a computer chip made? How much high-tech is involved? What is the current situation of China’s computer chip industry? What are the challenges? Mia’s mother helped the students understand computer chips using simple and childlike language. During the question-and-answer session, the students all raised their hands in excitement. It turns out that there are still such amazing things in our lives!
Grade 2 theme:
Adjacent to the Stars, Accompanied by the Clouds: An Introduction to Civil Aviation
Emily’s mother from Class 2B brought her knowledgeable colleagues from China Eastern Airlines to SUIS Qingpu and presented an aviation class for the Grade 2 students. The guests from China Eastern Airlines moved the daily work of the airport into the school theater. The flight attendants demonstrated to the students what they do on a typical day, and taught the children how to tie a beautiful silk scarf. The pilot showed the children his unique office – the cockpit. The sophisticated cockpit equipment dazzled the children. The staff of the operation control center patiently told the children how thousands of flights every day were run in an orderly manner. When the civil aviation teachers introduced the new domestic aircraft C919, independently developed and manufactured by China, the children were very excited and proud that their motherland could build such a powerful aircraft!
The activity not only broadened the students’ knowledge, but also stimulated their curiosity for a career in aviation!
Grade 3 Theme:
Reading Books – Awakening enthusiasm for reading
Grade3 was honoured to invite Yang Yi’s father, a wise and enthusiastic parent in Class 3C, to give our students a fun and memorable lecture with the theme of enriching the mind through reading. At the beginning of the lecture, Mr. Yang shared stories from his childhood, and quickly narrowed the distance between himself and the children with warm words and humorous language so that they could feel the fun and charm of reading.
As a father of two, he is well aware of the topics his children care about and the confusion they may encounter during the reading process. Starting from the children’s interests, he carefully selected many interesting and educational books and stories and turned reading into a feast of knowledge and joy. While inspiring children’s love of reading, he also shared a lot of practical reading strategies to help them better appreciate the wisdom in books.
By the end of Mr. Yang’s lecture, the students came to learn that reading is not only a valuable tool for self-improvement, but also a relaxing and enjoyable experience. We believe that after this lecture, children will enthusiastically plunge into the world of reading and enrich their hearts and souls with books.
Grade 4 theme:
Art Appreciation – The recovery of all things
Art is a treasure of world culture, embodying the crystallization of human wisdom and emotions. Through art appreciation, we can appreciate the styles of different cultures, feel the spiritual world of artists, and enrich our own spiritual life.
Melisa’s mother from 4C led Grade 4 students to explore and learn about the recovery of all things in spring, ancient and modern Chinese as well as foreign artworks. From the classic famous phrases describing all things in spring in ancient Chinese poetry, to the green in the brush of the post-impressionist Van Gogh, to the green found in the traditional Chinese colour, students learned about how Chinese green represents the beauty of the Song Dynasty and enjoyed the songs “Edelweiss” and “Do Re Mi” from the classic musical “The Sound of Music”. Through words, colours, and art, the creativity of the students was stimulated. The students showed great interest in the lectures and actively participated in the interactive sessions, asking questions and offering insights. Perhaps, the seeds of art quietly germinated at that moment during this wonderful lecture!
Online Anti-Deception Guide for Primary School Students
Li Yuqi’s father in Class 5B led the 5th grade students to understand the various routines of online scams. Dad Li started his lecture with a mobile game scam video adapted from a real case, which aroused the enthusiasm and resonance of the students. He then introduced several other examples, from the Trojan virus linked by unfamiliar mobile phone SMS messages to various winning scams and so on. Through videos and case studies, he taught students to see through each scam! The children showed great interest in the lecture, and they couldn’t wait to ask questions and express their opinions afterwards. The atmosphere was relaxed and warm throughout. Through Dad Li’s wonderful lecture, students improved their awareness of fraud prevention. At the same time, students were also encouraged to share with their families the need to make their home network more secure!
We are so fortunate to have amazing parents at SUIS Qingpu from all walks of life. We sincerely look forward to more parents joining us in the future, sharing their rich life experiences with the students and influencing and inspiring them with their practical actions!
