It is Golden September,
the time of autumn breezes and fruitfulness.
After a peaceful and pleasant summer vacation,
we are back to our familiar campus.
With a new journey and fresh expectations, we started a new semester and ushered in our first lesson of the school year. First to the stage, Sunny Huang, our campus Co-Principal, shared with students the importance of “knowing kindness and cherishing blessings”. The life we are used to – orderly traffic, bright and spacious classrooms, tasty and healthy meals, high-quality and comfortable clothes – should not be taken for granted. There is no such thing as a quiet life, because someone else carries the load for you. The reason why we can enjoy life quietly is because there are many people who are quietly dedicated to their efforts. They are doctors, nurses, soldiers, police, journalists, and many more. They are the heroes and warriors fighting on the front lines.
Today, our school enjoyed the honour of inviting a well-known anti-drug police officer from Yunnan, a national model worker who had previously been received by General Secretary Xi Jinping and former Premier Li Keqiang, to give a lecture to our students.
The lecture was attended by not only the students of our Middle and High Schools, but also our Primary School. In the past, students had gained a preliminary understanding of the dangers of drugs. In order to maximize their profits, drug dealers try their best to hide drugs and conceal their activities. But no matter how cunning the drug dealers are, there are in the front lines of drug enforcement the fiery eyes of the anti-drug police, fighting these criminals with wisdom and courage. They go deep into the tiger’s lair wearing plain clothes. Their bloodshed and sacrifice creates a “world free of drugs”. They are the dancers on the tip of the knife, although we cannot expose the faces of this mosaic of heroes!
Listening to the warm applause from the students, Li said, “Hearing the applause from the students makes me very excited. To me, applauding is not only for others, but also for myself. Such a life will be wonderful!” Li Liu-hua told the students, “If you have a dream, you have to work hard to realize it, and exercising well is the foundation for realizing your dreams.” He humorously said that he insisted on running and exercising every morning, just to be able to walk as fast as he can at 80 years old.
Through our listening in this first lesson of the school year, we further understood the harm of drugs and the hardship of the police officers who fight on the front lines of drug enforcement to protect us. Drug prevention is the responsibility of our whole society. Anti-drug work is related to national security, the rise and fall of the nation and the well-being of the people. It is a job that requires the participation of our whole society. As students, we must improve awareness and the prevention of drug use, know how to refuse drugs, protect ourselves, cherish life, build a harmonious campus, and create a harmonious society through unremitting efforts.
Feedback from students
On the first day of school, I was honoured to meet Mr. Li, a model worker, and listen to his speech. As an anti-drug police officer, Mr. Li had the courage and wisdom to arrest drug traffickers in Yunnan and protect everyone’s safety. In this speech, Mr. Li not only told many stories about himself and his team members, but also gave students a new understanding of their dreams. Mr. Li’s speech was humorous and interesting, and it made us understand the truth. I gained a lot!
When Mr. Li stepped onto the stage, I could feel the excitement and the thrills. I did not know such a seemingly stereotypical and serious lecture could be so interesting. Mr. Li was so funny and humorous!
Mr. Li first shared some of his experiences when he arrived at the principal’s office. As a narcotics police officer, he entertained interesting thoughts when seeing the principal’s stone in the office – it had reminded him of his previous experiences and imagined that there was poison in it – this was very funny and interesting. The humorous words make people want to listen more and more. Because of his lecture, I have great affection for Li. He is not only humorous, but he can also describe boring things so well. Most importantly, in the face of personal injury, he not only did not complain, but also took it as a gift – that is a great example that I need to follow.
