Everyone was full of emotion and enthusiasm, and the audience fully felt the rich cultural atmosphere reflected in this traditional festival of the Chinese nation, highlighting the positive and uplifting spirit of the students at SUIS Qingpu. Ancient Rhymes, Poetry, a Literature Competition, and ‘Fei Hua’
Feihualing is a game that people often played in ancient times. It is a game that not only tested students’ reserves of poetry and lyrics, but also their ability to respond promptly. It is also a competition of quick reactions and psychological qualities.
At SUIS Qingpu, a group of students who are poetry enthusiasts studied hard and prepared at home for the upcoming battle. Some students ‘burned the midnight oil’ to read poems, flipping through a large number of poetry collections in advance to increase their knowledge of lyrics. Some students wrote with great speed and jotted down the prepared verses in their notebooks. The students deepened their memory of the poetry through constant repetition and recital.
With the eager anticipation of their classmates, the competitors were finally ushered into the ‘big battle’. Feihualing began with the word “moon”. “The bright moon shines in the pine trees, and the clear spring water flows downstream over the stones”; “A moon shines above Chang’an city with the sound of a thousand housewives washing clothes”; “When the moon hangs high in the sky, people share this moment no matter how far they are from each other”; “The bright moon rises from the Tianshan Mountains, amidst the vast sea of clouds”; “Holding the water and moon in hand, the fragrance of flowers covers one’s clothes”; “Who by the river first saw the full moon?” Classic poems were blurted out from the students’ mouths, and exciting poems were compared with one another. Exciting lyrics were also compared, repeatedly. Due to the students’ sufficient preparation and some very close results, the game entered a heated stage for a while.
After several rounds of hard work and competition, Angel from Class 6B stood out and topped the list. After the game, the students were still unsatisfied. Through the competition of “Feihualing”, students developed a stronger interest in poetry, lyrics, and traditional Chinese culture. Even though the competition was short, we will continue to study traditional Chinese culture in the future and become excellent inheritors of Chinese culture.
A Poetic Time, an Ink-stained Golden Autumn
Poetry clears the heart, rhymes enhance chapters, and songs last thousands of years. Autumn winds breeze over peach and plum trees (meaning lively students), promoting elegant poetry.
To guide students to experience unique literary expressions, ignite youthful passions, understand and use imagery to convey emotions, and enhance their aesthetic tastes, we conducted a session for sharing original poetry on our campus. With beautiful dreams and pure emotions, students made brave attempts of self-awareness, social thinking, and the pursuit of ideals.
This group of lively and cheerful students, while occasionally ‘mischievous’ but pure and thoughtful, were full of passion for literary creation. The students actively participated, and the Chinese language teachers provided guidance as the students created new poems. At the same time, the teachers carefully reviewed students’ original poems and proposed some modifications. Students actively modified their poems and peers helped to correct each other – many excellent works emerged during this process. After evaluation and selection, several award-winning works were chosen.
The following is the list of original poetry winners:
