The autumn wind is cool and the fruits are fragrant. It’s a good time to study! There are two treasure houses in the SUIS Qingpu Campus: the 1st and 2nd floor Learning Resource Centers (LRCs). The 1st floor LRC mainly serves primary school students, and the 2nd floor LRC mainly serves middle and high school students. These are places where students can quietly linger during class library visits, at break times, and even after school. Unlike traditional libraries, each LRC not only undertakes book organizing and lending functions, but also organizes students to read by themselves and in groups, and regularly conducts special exhibitions, writers’ meetings, and various types of reading clubs. At present, the LRCs have officially published books, newspapers, magazines, academic journals and other learning resources, as well as special book stands that display the books our students have written and created by themselves.
Every student who enters SUIS Qingpu will experience a very vivid and professional “LRC first lesson”, given by full-time LRC teachers. The LRC teachers take the students to visit the LRC, show them its basic layout, and teach them how to find the books they are interested in.
Students will become accustomed to the Chinese Library Classification Method used to classify Chinese books, and the Dewey Decimal Classification Method used to classify English books. Students will also be familiarized with the Lexile Measure system used for organizing English books according to ability. Through the teacher’s demonstration, they will also get to know and use the LRC’s “Three King Kongs”: the book query machine, the face recognition borrowing and returning machine, and the smart data publishing machine.
The book search machine can accurately manage book queries and provide easy-to-follow navigation routes to specific LRC resources. Students can search books by subject name, author, and classification, and there are two buttons on the right side of the search result: “Book Details” and “3D Map”. If one clicks “Book Details”, the page will display information like book name, author, publisher, category, storage location, shelf number, and barcode number, etc. If one clicks “3D Map”, the position of the book will be displayed intuitively in the 3D image of the library with text and voice prompts, so that students can quickly find the location of the book.
The face recognition borrowing and returning machine is a self-service device that can scan, recognize and facilitate the borrowing of books and periodicals with special labels. After the students log in through the face recognition system, they can borrow, return, query and renew books on the machine. It is worth mentioning that all books can be borrowed and returned at one time, and the whole process only takes 3 seconds, a very efficient and convenient process. Therefore, many students come to borrow and return books during break time – the convenience of borrowing books makes reading happen much more often!
The smart data publishing machine mainly includes functions like new book recommendations, book guidance, class reading ranking, personal reading ranking, and real-time borrowing data analyses. On the publishing machine, students can also see the ranking of their own class and the top three students who read most books for a given month. The power of role models is limitless, and the reading environment is infectious. At SUIS Qingpu, you will see students in the canteen waiting in line for meals while reading a book, teachers holding books and sharing their views, and Ayis having a rest in a corner, quietly reading after a busy work of work.
It is a new semester and a new beginning! Come on! Let’s start a wonderful journey together with our Learning Resource Centers!
