In order to enable parents to better understand their children’s learning and life in school, fully experience the campus culture and education concept of SUIS Qingpu, and truly achieve the goal of “Zero distance between home and school; Help students grow”, the middle school department held “Parents’ Open Day” on November 20th.
In the early morning, parents walked into the school. The beautiful piano sound attracted everyone, then er’hu, horn, flute and other instruments came on the stage in turn. The children expressed their warm welcome to the parents with wonderful performance, and the parents started their Open Day journey.
When the class bell rang, the parents entered into the assigned classes and experienced the wonderful lessons with the children. They all had a deeper understanding of the children’s classroom learning content as well as their learning performance.
CHINESE
The students followed O’learys famous micro novel “In Berlin” and entered Berlin during the war period. Through listening, reading, independent thinking, communication and other varieties of classroom tools, students and parents witnessed the damages caused by the war to millions of families. They also studied the author’s critique on the cruel war. Children’s active and fluent expression, as well as unique and profound understanding made parents smile and proud.
ENGLISH
The main content of this lesson was finding the difference of students’ school life in China and Singapore. Under the guidance of the teacher, students actively brain stormed and discussed. In groups, they shared their unique ideas and thoughts from time to time. At the end of the class, the students played a memory game to improve their English ability in a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.
MATH
In the happy, relaxing atmosphere created by the teacher, students actively participated and well understood the definition of the Center, Radius, Diameter and Circle on the base which they learned the circumference of the circle and the derivation of the formula by practice. Through the methods of independent inquiry and cooperative learning, children learned to analyze, to work with groups and to share their basic knowledge which helped develop their study methods and improve their mathematical literacy.
ENGLISH MATH
Children actively participated in classroom learning by reviewing the proper nouns they have learned as ice breaker. In the class, with the help of multimedia, the countdown tool, and the screen transmission between iPad and seewo, problem-solving process and thinking traces were directly and effectively showed. At the end of the class, children made up their own questions to help understand deeply on summary and sublimation. English implementation and mathematics ontology were integrated, so that children could really experience the fun of learning mathematics, applying mathematics in 40 minutes.
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
Parents and children became learning partners to build circuits, wield wires and modify wood. Under the leadership of children, parents thought and practiced, mastered the knowledge and skills easily in a busy and happy learning atmosphere. Parents loved and enjoyed this moment. When the bell rang, some parents felt reluctant to leave.
MUSIC
In class, the children reviewed the theoretical basis of music and understood the importance of music English. Then the first ukulele performance officially started. The children mastered four universal chords, quickly found their confidence to continue learning, and learned a charming Hawaiian song “Molika’s”. They fully enjoyed the music class.
ART
The video of natural and man-made destruction of Dunhuang frescoes inspired students’ sense of responsibility and mission to protect the world cultural heritage! After learning about the history of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, students learned how to draw the flying sky in Dunhuang murals. Parents also participated in the design together. In an active atmosphere, children fully displayed their imagination and creativity.
PE
English teaching allows children to learn not only sports skills, but also some English sports terms. The football game aroused students’ interests. The students all participated in and tried their best which showed good sportsmanship and fighting spirit.
CAMPUS TOUR
After the classes, Ms Tina Tong, the director of the middle school department, showed the parents around the school as well as some student guides. They introduced the school’s multifunction room, school museum, CCA courses, etc. to the parents. In the open space on the second floor, parents enjoyed a wonderful performance of the school chorus. In this limited time, parents fully understood the rich and colorful learning content apart from the main subjects.
SCHOLASTIC
Scholastic Online Reading was officially launched by middle school department. This is an online reading system. Students can read books based on their reading levels. We aim to use this system to give students’ reading motivation and develop their reading habits. As Mr. Watt said, “Exercise strengthens the body, reading strengthens the brain”. Daily reading is not only to accumulate words, but also to exercise children’s thinking ability.
The participation and support from the parents is the most powerful help for the school. On this parents’ open day, they walked into the campus, went into the classroom, understood the school curriculum in a thorough way, experienced their children’s learning life in school, had a deeper understanding of the school, enhanced the two-way communication between home and school. As long as we collaborate, we will progress. I believe that with our joint efforts, children can grow more vigorously and healthily!
