As a significant day for ‘Math-man’, March 14th is the day that can’t be missed. It is identified as the International Pi Day. The earliest known large-scale Pi-themed celebration was organized by Larry Shaw, a physicist on March 14th, 1988, at the San Francisco Science Museum.
Middle school students from SUIS Qingpu had great fun celebrating the birthday of π in the English Maths class this week. Let’s hear what they say!
6A Shelly:
I think English Math is a very good subject, but it’s a little bit hard for me. With this subject l can get more knowledge. My teacher Ms. Tina taught us very seriously. During spare time she will give us some fun exercises on the app Kahoot. I think it was very interesting, because with this app, I am able to know how much l had learned, and what else I should know.
6B Kalen:
English Mathematics is a math course taught in English. The teacher usually issues practical questions, plays video materials, or plays PPT to us. In class, the teacher teaches us some English Mathematical terms, their usage and other knowledge. The topic recently is Pi, due to the Pi Day. In the latest class we learned about Pi and Pi rate. Ms. Tina asked us to do a tabloid report on π and let us design a layout using a computer. From the activities, we can not only consolidate previous knowledge, but also learn and expand our scope of new knowledge!
6C Sam:
On Pi Day, we organized an event on the circumference rate. We had two or three people in a group to make a poster for the circumference rate day. We designed the background, used computer software to complete the task. To make a poster or a video, you need to understand mathematics, design, color matching, but also computer skills. I learned that to accomplish something, we need tests and promotion of comprehensive ability instead of skills only. At the same time, it requires teamwork.
6D Hannah:
English mathematics is a mathematics course taught in English. It can make us feel the charm of English while learning mathematics and help us improve our oral English. In class we do exercises together with the teacher; Share and discuss ideas together; The teacher prepare some videos to help us understand the key points of every lesson. It also teaches us how to read and use proper mathematical terms. This class is really full!
Ms. Tina:
We aim to stimulate students’ inspiration and enthusiasm in learning math. Though we can’t hold Pi Day event in campus, we can still help students feel that math learning can also be about geography, history, English, science, architecture, technology, humanities and other knowledge related to Pi. You can also participate in Kahoot! Quiz, the original math learning can be so vivid and interesting. Let’s enjoy math and fall in love with it!
