Shanghai United International School Qingpu Campus sent three students to the Regional Rounds of the World Scholar’s Cup event for the first time. The WSC is an event that connects scholars from different backgrounds; inspiring a passion for knowledge and giving scholars a platform to engage with the content they have learnt. Scholars are able to participate in debating, collaborative writing, and multiple choices tests. The aforementioned events are done in groups of 3, where every team member has to participate. Each scholar is taken out of their comfort zone, where we are all challenged to partake in debates as a team, write a persuasive essay and respond to multiple choice questions. The questions are drawn from the 6 subject areas given beforehand which each team had to study.
The competition which began on Saturday and ended on Sunday last month was graced by students from several independent schools from all over Shanghai. Our students did very well against top scholars from across the world and we are so proud of them. The aims were to motivate students to discover new strengths and practice new skills, and to inspire a global community of future scholars and leaders.
Congratulations to the pupils for their overall splendid performance: Silver – History, Gold – Best overall, Silver – Writing
The team members of this competition will set up the “World Scholars Cup Club” to form next year’s participating teams, pass their own experience to the new members, and apply what they have learned.

In order to participate in this game, we had prepared for several weeks. Mr. Tony provided all the required information for us and we looked up the research package every night. Although the process was very hard, but we also got a lot of knowledge that we cannot learn in the classroom. In addition, we also did a lot of practice for the debate, which was one of the most important part in this competition. From the beginning, we were unable to express our own opinions and refutations correctly. However, at the last with confident and powerful examples, we perfectly refuted all the arguments of the other side. We have grown a lot from the preparation time. In the official competition, we participated in debates, writing, team competitions and individual competitions. We met many opponents with super strength and also gained precious friendship. Although we didn’t achieve the expected global competition this time, but this competition experience taught us a lot and also laid a foundation for our next competition. Fortunately, in this game, I have a total of one gold and two silver awards, I also hope to continue to go beyond myself in the next time!

Each debating round was a hard battle, a contest of debate and argument, and a battle of mind. The short fifteen minutes of topic preparation time strengthened our team’s tacit understanding and ability. Then from the writing contest to the QUIZ question, the normal game lasted about 4 hours. In these two short days, became the harvest of receiving knowledge, friendship, confidence, the joy of success. See u next year! WSC!

In junior high school, I have participated in WSC and entered the global competition. This year was the first time I participated in the senior group. To be honest, I was very nervous because the competition in the junior group was already very intense. After arriving at the competition, I found that everyone has a very solid foundation in English, and they have a thorough understanding of topics and materials. In the competition, the team debates of our group were much better than in practice, and the understanding of the material package also deepened. Although there was a small loss, we have made many friends and gained valuable experience.
