On April 17th and 18th, 42 middle school students from SUIS Qingpu participated in the World Scholar‘s Cup Shanghai Regional Round. The World Scholar’s Cup is an international academic feast that focuses on individual team learning ability and collaboration ability. The competition lasted for two days and was divided into four parts: Team debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge and Scholar’s Bowl. After two days of intense competition, we have achieved 44 gold medals, 56 silver medals and the second place of Collaborative Writing. Through this competition, we have increased our abilities in study and made many new friends.
Opening Ceremony
At the opening ceremony, Douglas and Min who are the presidents of the World Scholars Cup Organizing Committee, took the scholars and the lovely alpacas on a journey of exploration and knowledge.
Team Debate
Scholars have 15 minutes to prepare for the writing. They can use electronic devices to collect information. Each scholar has four minutes to give a speech.
Collaborative Writing
Scholars should write an essay within 45 mins through teamwork and share their own feedback with each other after they finish writing.
Scholar’s Challenge
Scholars face a single choice that tests independence and knowledge.
Scholar’s Bowl
Being a good scholar also tests the ability of people to work as a team. Scholars have to work together and answer questions in 15 seconds. The topics cover a wide range of subjects, including interdisciplinary subjects, general studies, and current social events.
Balance Challenge
To get a lovely alpaca, scholars need to have strong ability to balance. It is not enough to stand firm, but also to be able to balance the alpaca.
Debate Showcase
Eight excellent debaters were selected to form a team of pros and cons and a panel of judges, which presented a wonderful debate for the scholars. We are so proud of Amy Lu and Luna Yang to represent our school to be on stage.
Talent Show
Versatile scholars can show their talents confidently if they are willing to.
Closing Ceremony
At the closing ceremony, we can see from the smiles of the scholars that they must have gained a lot of knowledge and experience.
The World Scholars Cup is an academic debate competition that combines tradition and modernity, a friendship gathering that embraces the world, and a great celebration of learning. We learn in it, learn knowledge and learn how to apply knowledge to the world around us; challenge opponents, but also challenge ourselves. I believe that our students can grow up in this competition, meet a better self, and become future scholars and leaders.
Reflections

The World Scholar’s Cup is an academic feast and an opportunity to show and explore yourself. I’m very happy to take part in this competition. In this competition, I felt very honored to win the prize and enter the semi-global round together with my teammates. Here, I would like to thank the school for giving me this opportunity and the teachers for their professional guidance. During the two days of competition, I not only gained knowledge, but also improved my abilities. WSC allows me to have a broader and more long-term vision. It made me view this wonderful world with a diversified, inclusive and critical way of thinking. In the next semi-global round, I will always work harder and challenge myself. WSC, it’s so worthy to meet you, see you again in July!

For me, WSC is more than just a game, it is more like a celebration of learning. In just two days, we participated in the four core projects of knowledge contest, collaborative creation, knowledge challenge and team debate. The concept of each project is very attractive and unique, and the theme is also very special. I think this is one of the reasons why I think this is a celebration of learning. All in all, during this period, I have grown a lot. What this game brought me was a wealth of knowledge, valuable experience and unique way of thinking. More importantly, it stimulated my potential and met a better version of myself. In order to meet a bigger alpaca, come on!

WSC is a precious and meaningful experience for me. For us, the nearly two-day competition is not only a physical and mental test, but also a high demand on psychological quality, accumulation of world culture and teamwork ability. During the preparation period, we learned a lot of extra-curricular knowledge from materials and extended research, and also made great progress in the team debate. In the competition, we met many excellent players, learned a lot of excellent qualities from them, and gained valuable friendship. We were honored to win the gold medal for group writing, and I also won two gold and two silver MEDALS, successfully advancing to the national advanced competition. Through this competition, I also realized my own shortcomings. Both the width and depth of the accumulation of world culture need to be strengthened. I hope we can make progress together and continue to break through ourselves in July.
