High School Literature Character Day
Getting inspiration:
Literature is a perfect way to get inspiration, guidance or even a way to escape from real life, even for just a second. No matter what you are going through in life, there is a character somewhere out there experiencing something similar, and cosplaying characters is an excellent way to express and display a literary work. Adding on to that, it also allows people to express their individual identity, which they might not be able to present in daily life.
Emboldened by all the above and at the same time working to deepen our students’ appreciation of literature, SUIS Qingpu recently held a successful Literature Characters Day. During the event, a whole-school project promoted by subject teachers, students were encouraged to dress up as their favourite characters and to read books in class.
《The Dawns Here Are Quiet》
《Little Reunions》
Flamboyant Characters:
It was fascinating to see the number of boys who were dressed up as female characters in order to support gender equality, normalizing boys wearing dresses while adhering to the principle of non-discrimination.
《Cruella》
Charlotte’s (G10) Cruella look was impressive. She was flamboyant, her confidence billowing out of her raised head and puffed chest. Every step she took through the hallways compelled other students’ jaws to drop. Everyone was riveted by her. Charlotte did an amazing job at exploiting the character Cruella to the fullest.
《The Grapes of Wrath》
《Pinocchio》
《Where’s Waldo?》
《Harry Potter》
Organization + Preparation:
Karis Xu (Vice-president of Student Council) was in charge of the organization of activity. He recalled that “the experience of preparing for the event was a kind of torture. Our prefect team and volunteers invested huge efforts and precious hours for it. Although it was exhausting for us to take on such a responsibility, I was glad to see students being entertained and enjoying themselves on the day.”
Due to all the hard work and some outstanding organizational skills, the rooms were warmed by much laughter. The event house was one of the most popular activities overall, which was also the most challenging to prepare. As the majority of the decorations that had been ordered didn’t arrive on time, volunteers had to be very resourceful, and all preparations for the venue were done in the evening before the day of the event. According to Karis, they even had to make use of parcel boxes to cover up windows in order to keep the room dark. Nevertheless, the outcome was delightful.
《Quatre-vingt-treize》
《Dunkirk》
《Aladdin》
Expressing Your Self-identities:
This successful event was evidence for the premise that not everything is learned in a classroom. We hope that SUIS Qingpu students reaped some harvest from this wonderful event, whether it was through the experience of working together as a team to prepare for the day and all the work that had to be done, or by learning to be confident in expressing the creative side of their identity.
