Self-introduction
Dear all students, parents and colleagues,I am Peng Jiaye, Deputy Head of the Middle School. I am honoured to be the protagonist for this month’s Gardener’s Portrait. I have been teaching for nearly 15 years, 13 of which have been with SUIS.
While at SUIS, I have enjoyed a platform for developing my teaching, gained a lot of experience in my work as a tutor, and have also experienced the charm of teamwork in our management team. At SUIS, my source of happiness comes from students, parents and colleagues.
At present, in addition to being responsible for the moral education management within our Middle School, I also serve as the Tutor for Class 6D. I would like to use the following words to express my thoughts about the important relationship between teachers and students, the home-school relationship, and teamwork:
Everyone is a piece of a big, special puzzle.
Everyone has his or her strengths and weaknesses.
In a team, only when the strengths and weaknesses complement each other can unity be achieved.
In Class 6D, a lack of any piece of the puzzle leads to incompleteness, and if everyone is a piece having exactly the same shape, the puzzle cannot be put together.
So, hold on to your originality, and do not change your goals and dreams.
I hope every teacher and student in SUIS Qingpu can play their due part and make a beautiful puzzle together.
In colleagues’ eyes
Bill Wang, Director of Middle School
I have had the honor of working with Mr. Peng this semester, and although our time together has only been a few months, I had heard of Mr. Peng’s excellent teaching capabilities for quite some time. As an English teacher, Gary can not only help students lay a solid foundation for their English, but can also help to improve their interest in learning through various English activities. When managing the class and while striving to nurture the characteristics of the class, he pays more attention to the cultivation of students’ teamwork and innovative abilities.
For the moral education management in the Middle School, Mr. Peng can not only design policies, but can also gradually refine and implement them; Gary carries out rich and colourful moral education activities in various forms, and strives to help students carry out a holistic education.

Although I haven’t worked with Mr. Peng for a long time, I was deeply impressed by his sunny and cheerful personality as well as his serious and down-to-earth working attitude. As an educator, he cares about the physical and mental growth of students with love. He always solves the problems faced by his students with wisdom, and helps them establish a correct outlook on and motivation for both life and desired values. I am lucky to be able to work with such an excellent teacher.

While Mr. Peng’s English name is Gary, we like to affectionately call him “Mr. Curry”. He is a humorous, talented, elegant and meticulous tutor and English teacher. For Gary, Class 6D is like a jigsaw puzzle. Each child has his or her strengths, weaknesses, and unique personality. They need to work as a team. Therefore, Class 6D has become a positive and lovely family under Gary’s leadership.
For teaching and learning, and based on strict requirements, Gary adheres to encouraging children’s enthusiasm for learning, carries out teaching according to each child’s learning situation, and communicates with parents in a timely manner. In everyday life, Gary pays special attention to students’ moral and psychological education, enjoys establishing strong professional connections with his students, and enjoys taking pictures of class activities in order to record the details of his students’ school lives.
We are very grateful to him.

I always believed that tutors should be serious and unsmiling so that students would look up to them.
Thus, it is hard to imagine that in just two or three months after entering Class 6D, Mr. Peng has become my “best friend” at school.
I can remember on the first day of school when he told me that I could make friends and deal with all kinds of relationships with classmates in the middle school.
Mr. Peng not only teaches us by words, but also teaches us by example. We are growing up happily within our classroom atmosphere, with both relaxing encouragement and impressive criticism.
Mr. Peng teaches us all the time how important it is to learn to behave when doing things and when making friends while learning knowledge.

Gentleness under seriousness and seriousness under humour make up the legendary figure of Mr. Peng. Tall, shiny hair, a pair of round gold glasses on the bridge of the nose is the image we were all familiar with.
He had many nicknames, such as “teacher Curry”, “Super Daddy” and “Master photographer”. He was not only our teacher, but he was also our friend.
Mr. Gary usually had a lively class, so his students liked their English class very much. As soon as the bell rung, Mr. Gary completely changed his appearance.
Because his English name is “Mr. Gary”, his students call him “Curry”; but he never gets angry.
“Curry” sometimes played ball games with us after class and sometimes told us jokes, so when the class was over, my classmates tended to surround him.
Our “Curry” is also a master photographer. Every time the school held activities, Mr. Gary would help us shoot a big movie. His students acted in front of the camera with great interest while he attempted to shoot pictures from multiple angles.
After PE class, when Mr. Gary saw us sweating crazily, he would remind us again and again to keep warm and to not catch cold…so, he became a ‘super nanny’ again and again.
It has now been more than 6 months since I graduated from Primary School. Although I have left SUIS, I miss everything there. Mr. Gary was a friendly mentor who, like a pearl, continues to glow in my heart and shine in my mind.
