Hello, everyone. I am Oliver Zhou Yang from Grade 10. I chose SUIS Qingpu because my parents hoped that by joining this school I would have more access to diverse cultures. It is my hope that during my high school career I will be able to harvest more valuable and meaningful experiences aside from my studies. Experiencing SUIS Qingpu’s international courses served to confirm the original decision to join the school. Moreover, there are not only diverse cultures here, but also a relaxed and harmonious campus atmosphere and teacher-student relationships, which have encouraged me to have more experiences and more participation, and of course, to gain more confidence.

SUIS Qingpu provides a stage for students to express themselves so that each student can showcase their abilities. I participated in Model United Nations debates and activities, and there I gained the ability to combine economic knowledge with practice in an MUN EcoSoc Committee. I also participated in the Voice of SUIS Qingpu ‘Top Ten Singers’ Competition and won second place!

The Book Economics of a Small Island was my primer on economics and opened the door to a new world for me. Through continuous reading of economics books and economics courses offered by the school, my interest in economics gradually became stronger.

Since entering the school, I have participated in various economic and financial competitions and won many awards. The EEO European Economics Olympiad enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of current world politics and the economies of European countries. The LIBF Global Financial Challenge exposed me to more knowledge of stock market analysis, accounting and finance. The IEO International Economics Olympiad cultivated my business case-study skills. I was particularly impressed by the NEC National Economics Competition during the pandemic. Both the review of economic knowledge, presentation preparation and speeches brought a lot of pressure to my teammates and I, since we were confined at home due to the lockdowns. However, we overcame many difficulties in online communication and finally won the national Team Gold medal!
I successfully ran for membership in the Student Council. During this period of serving as the commissary in charge of Academics, I cooperated with my classmates to establish an online learning WeChat group, which provided a better learning environment for students and improved the relationships between my peers. I planned teachers’ and students’ birthday celebrations with my classmates and prepared unexpected surprises for them as well.
At this point in my high school career, I have learned how to not only be proactive, but to also become more confident and positive. This year, I have been learning A-Level mathematics and economics in advance when I could spare the time. I have thoroughly enjoyed my high school life at SUIS Qingpu and I am excited to have more experiences and challenges in the future!
Oliver in the eyes of teachers
Ms. Heidi Maria Cole
Economics Teacher; Head of Year
I have had the absolute pleasure of being Oliver’s Tutor, Head of Year, Economics teacher as well as working with him on Student Council for the last academic year. Oliver is one of those students that only come along every so often. Oliver has dedicated himself to being an outstanding economist by diligently studying a range of theoretical and real-world resources without prompting, achieving consistent A* grades in the subject. Oliver has entered multiple Economics competitions as an individual and in a team, including NEC and IEO and has placed highly with every entry. I had the pleasure of watching one of Oliver’s presentations for a competition online and the execution was remarkable.
What impresses me the most, is that as well as being a seemingly natural economist, Oliver is a sincerely kind, warm, thoughtful and authentic young adult with a benevolent nature. Oliver is quick to recognise a student, teacher or member of staff in need of assistance and does so without a second thought, demonstrating a level of empathy and maturity well beyond his years. I whole-heartedly believe that Oliver truly does have the world at his feet, and I have every faith that Oliver can achieve absolutely anything that he wants. Oliver, never stop being that warm-hearted hardworking young man!
Mr. Ethan Earl Perkins
Global Perspectives Teacher; Head of Year
I have taught Oliver since September and I can honestly say that he is uniquely skilled in communicating with his peers as well as his teachers. Oliver tends to spend time thinking quite deeply about his academic assignments and the results are often thoughtful and meticulously done pieces of work. He is also very empathetic and I can see that he genuinely wants others to succeed – he never thinks only of himself, and that’s a rare quality to possess, especially in grade 10! This is the main reason why I was excited to see Oliver successfully run for Student Council – I wanted him to be a role model for other students and positively influence them with his kindness. I expect only good things for him in the future. Keep being you, Oliver!
