With the theme “Toward the future, painting our childhood” for this year’s Art Festival, a Science Fiction Painting Competition was successfully held recently in our Primary School. Science fiction painting, also known as “futurism,” is a kind of children’s painting with illusory meanings, imaginary objects, illusory scenes, dreamlands, and other childlike fun. It is also an art form that genuinely reflects our student’s pursuits of a better world.
《Science Fiction • The Future 》 not only involved an art competition, but also an interdisciplinary inquiry course. Students in Grades 1 to 5 learned about various themes such as transportation, robots, futuristic cities, underwater technology, and space. Under the guidance of their art teachers, students began to boldly imagine the future’s potential lifestyles from inspiring ideas in clothing, food, housing and transportation, ecological environments, medical treatment, science and technology.
Students then picked up their brushes to create a variety of new inventions like a “Super Parking Lot” and “Housework Robots”. They also dived into the sea to explore a futuristic undersea city, flew into space to see stars, and even travelled into Shanghai in the year 2050.
After all the students’ submissions were received, online voting completed, and offline selections made, final artwork pieces were selected in the following categories: Best Creativity Award, Best Sci-Fi Painting, Outstanding Painting, and the Super Popular Award. SUIS Qingpu’s students used paintbrushes to let science reveal the many branches of art, and used creative painting language to express their dreams about future human social life, science, technology, and other futuristic aspects of the universe. We believe that their voyage in science fiction painting at this year’s art festival increased students’ creative abilities and their sense of social responsibility. Perhaps one day in the future, the beautiful and fascinating ideas of our students will eventually become a reality.
