Shanghai United International School Qingpu Campus Dominates Prestigious Physics Competition.

After completing the rigorous British Physics Olympiad Competition, three of our very own promising and passionate young physicists received both recognition and rewards for competing and defeating challengers from other schools.

British Physics Olympiad

The British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) began in 1979 and historically has been used to select the UK Physics Team for participation in the International Physics Olympiad. The Organizing Committee is mainly composed of representatives from Oxford University, the Physical Society and the Odgen Foundation. The BPhO’s office is located in the Department of Physics, Oxford University.

The BPhO aims to encourage the study of physics and to recognize excellence in young physicists through competition. BPhO pays attention to the flexible application of physical knowledge to solving problems.

Global Gold Award

“I was not overly surprised that I was awarded gold in this competition, as the mathematical methods involved in solving the problems were far more simplistic than what I had prepared for. I really appreciated the structure for our preparation classes, especially the Q&A sessions and the discussion framework that were used to help us get ready. I was able to achieve a 37/40 in the competition, which I am very proud of.

“All in all, I had aimed to achieve a high level in the competition by completing many of the more difficult extended questions. The competition helped me solve the more basic A Level physics questions, and of course, it was a fantastic opportunity for me to discover how much I have actually grown in the subject.”

“Physics is a really interesting subject – in each and every lesson, I am always eager to engage with my teacher and my classmates. I like to preview content before lessons and review content after lessons, both of which I believe are equally important. Physics is more about understanding and applying knowledge, as well as the skillful use of formulas and specific analyses of various topics. While I have also encountered a lot of difficulties in learning physics, I have adhered to the mindset of being okay with not always needing to understand something immediately. I like how physics gets to the bottom of things. Although many problems are easily solved, there are deeper layers that fascinate me. This has a lot to do with my teachers and classmates, all of whom I sincerely appreciate.”

“I feel fortunate to have been placed so highly in the ranks. On my journey in learning physics for the competition, I took a very serious and studious approach, and it was efficient. I am proud of my success; I am honored by the accomplishments. I see it as the rewards for my efforts. In addition, it was the labor and wisdom of the teachers who help me push forward. I would like to whole heartedly thank Ms. Iris, for her support, help, and care. “Congratulations! As a physics teacher, I feel delighted and encouraged to have spent the extra time prepping the students for this competition. The competition presented new formats of questioning that our students had not previously been exposed too. While initially their knowledge was lacking, there was a substantial quantity of resources available to the students to support their preparation.

“The competition included a lot of advanced high school and even university-level physics content. Our students were pushed to learn beyond the curriculum, to spend more hours than they were used to learn the subject, and to work harder than they’ve had to in the past. We arranged additional competition preparation courses for the students who were participating in the competition as well as for others who had an interest and passion for physics. In the end, nine students participated in the competition, with one winning a Global Gold Award and two winning Global Bronze Awards. Receiving these medals was a great acknowledgement for the students, and symbolizes the amount of effort they put into the competition. That recognition has hopefully lit a fire under their ‘physics feet’, and established an awesome starting point for their careers as future scientists.”
