At SUIS Qingpu, there is a group of teenagers sharing the same love of science, and they have come together to create a science club called the Science Club.
About Science Club
This club is a new initiative, having been founded on June 1, 2022. It is a club run completely by students in the Middle School. These students are bold and daring, applying what they have learned in class and in books to improve the community. The club has its own WeChat official account, called Science Club. The students want to spread trivia, hot and fun facts about science, in order to bring us closer to the frontiers of science and technology and to develop a love for life and science. They are looking forward to your participation and to the participation from anyone who also has a love for science.
How did the Science Club start?
Jason Guo from our Middle School has always been extremely interested in science. One day, during a conversation with his science teacher Ms. Julie, the idea of forming a science club planted in his mind. He immediately invited his classmates who also love science to join him, and soon recruited the core members. Once the team was formed, they designed their own recruitment posters which served to announce the birth of this club. Soon after the formation of the Science Club, the WeChat official account was born. After the first recruitment notice was published, they received a dozen applications.
The President of the Science Club is Jason Guo. He excels in his studies and has many interests, including photography, fencing, Shanghai Opera and debating. He is a keen participant in school, extra-curricular activities and competitions. He is a core member of the Integrated Media School team, a star competitor in the World Scholars Cup and a Shanghai Opera performer in the school’s “Songze Sound” talent show.
His favourite subject is science, and he loves to be involved in the science club. He is particularly interested in science subjects such as physics, computer science, chemistry, environmental science, and biology, and has won gold medals in the 2021 British Physics Olympiad and in both the AMC8 and Kangaroo Math competitions. As the founder of the Science Club, he leads the academic team in planning events, writing articles to spread Science facts and training for competitions. They are always active in planning and preparing for every event, and always on hand to solve any problems related to academic issues.
SUIS Qingpu’s Middle School offers a wide range of STEM courses for students, and they have produced their own research in them e.g. an introduction to cutting-edge technology in science class; knowledge of the HTML language and how to design a website logo in computer science class; an understanding of the relationship between birds and the environment in environmental science class; and a design of ‘invisible’ bird houses for birds on the campus in design and technology class. These and other achievements can be posted on the Science Club official account so that more people can learn about the enthusiasm and amazing creativity of the new generation of teenagers who are learning about technology.
After learning by chance about the plight of refugee children, club leader Jason Guo used what he learned in computer science class to design a website to promote information about refugees and to bring more attention to the situation of refugee children, hoping to give a voice to the isolated refugee community.
The Science Club of SUIS Qingpu welcomes your participation!
If you are good at something (art, editing or academia), or simply wish to share a love of science, please follow the Science Club, or contact the editor privately if you would like to join the team!
In addition to recruiting members, the Science Club is also calling for submissions from students, teachers, parents and others. Please reach out to us if you are able to provide us with:
- resources about science; or
- works about science that you wish to publish through us.
Please do not hesitate to contact the editor by leaving a message privately!
The Science Club is a cross-curricular programme for all middle school students, which not only satisfies students’ learning interests, but also helps them to broaden their knowledge and enhance their overall quality and ability by exploring different disciplines. The Science Club wants to become a science club with special characteristics, to contribute to the promotion of the school’s club culture, to promote students’ Science and technological works on a larger stage, and to show the creativity, practical ability, and social responsibility of young people in the new era.
The Science Club is comprised of a young but vibrant group of students who are enthusiastic about science and willing to share their knowledge. It consists of a PR group, an outreach group, an academic group, and an advisory group. With the help of our teachers, we hope to turn the Science Club into an academic communication platform for young people in STEM subjects. Through this platform, we will continue to send out original articles in science and research, and of course, fun facts from science. In the process, members of the club can not only learn knowledge about science, but also practice their organizational, planning and publicity skills. Whenever we encounter a problem, we discuss it together to come up with the best solution, and without realizing it we become each other’s best ‘partners’.
The Pyramid of Learning, proposed by American scientist Edgar Dale, states that the most effective way of learning is through active enquiry (e.g. looking up information) and teaching others (e.g. editing science articles). In the process of organizing science club activities, members can improve their learning skills, logical thinking, as well as their ability to edit articles, designs and layouts, and make presentations.
We hope that the Science Club can become a favourite platform for students to learn and communicate about science. However, we have limited power as a student club and hope to gain more support from the school and from fellow students. Finally, all members of the Science Club want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the school for helping us promote the club on its official account!
