magazine is hidden in the poem
The name of the school magazine is actually linked to the Beijing Olympics Games. I really adore one of the words in our school name, which is ‘he’ (SUIS in Chinese is ‘Xiehe’). My father once showed me a video of the 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremony, and 2008 was also the year I was born. The most impressive part in the video was when the actors were collectively creating movable typography. My father asked me, “Chinese culture is rich, extensive and profound. Why don’t we just show the world the simple word ‘he’?” He said that ‘he’ represents China’s splendid culture – it is the essence of Chinese culture.
So, I feel that the magazine’s name should follow our school’s name “SUIS” and therefore also contain the word ‘he’. In this way, it would not only impart the school’s name, but also represent SUIS’ important teaching philosophy. The school magazine will use its unique way to share about SUIS’ special characteristics, letting us show our brilliance, the collision of different ideas, the integration of different ideas, our working together, and our improving together. The school magazine is going to bloom with its youth – every paragraph will be attractive, and every phase will be brilliant.
Thinking about another word that can be matched with the word ‘he’, I asked my Dad. He said that since it is in the name of the school magazine, it must have a profound cultural connotation before it can be inherited. He guided me to read a lot of books, and finally we found a poem in “The Classics of Poetry”. The poem is called ‘Xiao Ya Jing Jing Zhe E’, and praises the cultivation of talents . We extracted the word ‘jing’ from the poem. ‘Jingjing’ describes a scene of lush grass and prosperity. The title of the magazine also takes the word ‘jing’, which means that the school magazine will play an important role in the mission of cultivating students’ social capacity at SUIS. In addition, ‘jing’ represents our ‘green’ Qingpu Campus. So, it specifically refers to SUIS Qingpu and shows that the school magazine was founded at SUIS Qingpu, flourished in Qingpu, and bloomed in the whole of SUIS. Our School magazine will certainly become the best among all the SUIS campuses.
The combination of ‘jing’ and ‘he’ means that all willing SUIS students are gathered together to contribute to the school magazine. Every member in the school magazine is capable. Let us create together and contribute to every publication of the school magazine. We hope that more and more students and teachers will jointly participate to enrich the content of the school magazine and improve its cultural scope so that it becomes the leading star of campus progress and student growth. Let everyone be proud of the magazine, and let everyone fall in love with writing, publishing, and recording life.
After reading this,
I believe that you will appreciate
the name of Jing He very much.
English name!
The official name is called, “Dream & Hope”.
‘Dream’ is a homophone for ‘jing’ and ‘hope’ is a homophone for ‘he’. When placed together, they communicate the meaning that the school magazine conveys the culture and customs of the campus. Students should think diligently, be good at discovering the dribs and drabs of life, and record them, so that they can better carry the hopes and dreams of their classmates, face the future together and go out into the world together.
the answer
“In the daytime, grass makes the campus full of green. In the clear sky, the air is fresh and transparent.
“In the evening, the moon climbs high, the moonlight is soft, the sky is silent. Even twittering birds don’t want to disturb this tranquility and fly away.
“In the morning, students enjoy themselves in the sunshine. In the evening students study.”
SUIS Qingpu provides a beautiful study environment, combining East and West. Cultivating ambitious aspirations, it lets students aspire to become citizens of the world with a global vision. When students reach the age of 18, they will grow into pillars of the country in various fields. The school journal is a collection of beautiful words and content, just like the famous collection of poems by the Indian poet Tagore. The school magazine records our daily school life. It will collect beautiful articles from teachers and students, integrate various genres and languages, and show the beautiful life at SUIS Qingpu across many aspects. It is a magazine that will bring you dreams and hope – it will no doubt be a very attractive book to read and enjoy.
SUIS General Principal Ms.
Maxine Lu provides a preamble
What makes me most excited is that our General Principal Ms. Maxine Lu specially wrote the preamble for the founding issue of our school magazine, Jinghe. She said:
Students from the SUIS Qingpu Campus decided to start a magazine called Jinghe. The word ‘he’ reflects the meaning of adapting to differences, appreciation of diversity, equality and co-prosperity. Jinghe is a good name. I read Kelly’s instruction for the school magazine’s name and I think it explains very clearly everyone’s expectations for the school magazine.
In retrospect, when I was in middle school more than 30 years ago, I also founded my own magazine with a group of good friends. It was named ‘Chu Yi’ (young wings), a homonym for the first grade of middle school. The term reflects the courage of young birds with immature wings as they learn to fly, and also breeds the joy and expectations of the ‘first day’. At that time, computers were not popular. We were busy and happy to plan, organize manuscripts, transcripts, illustrations and mimeographs. The editorial department later created several talented novelists and drama screenwriters. Of course, students had different lives then, but they still loved literature. When we got together decades later, I forgot what content I learned in middle school, but everyone always talked about the experience of publishing that magazine.
In middle school, it is very meaningful to have a magazine, edited by peers, and something that builds a shared growth memory. I hope that our students can unite with their friends and show their words and talents on the platform of Jinghe. I hope that the teachers can let students work by themselves so that the students can experience and create by themselves – in this way, young wings will eventually soar.
Ms. Maxine Lu’s preamble encourages us to make Jinghe better. We will definitely work hard to make Jinghe a favourite magazine for every SUIS student.
we will let you know the deep
meaning of our school magazine’s cover. Let us look forward to
learning more!
