On February 24, 2023, on a cold, clear spring afternoon, our students were eager to discuss the debate competition they had just watched.
“Do the benefits received from economic globalization outweigh any type of harm, or does any type of harm outweigh the benefits?”
After eight preliminary rounds, four rematch rounds and two semi-finals, we finally ushered in the long-awaited finals. Despite being postponed by the pandemic, the time had arrived for both the weather to change, flowers to bloom and for our students to meet other teams head on and debate!
Last semester, our G7 and G8 students debated topics such as ‘Keyboard man’, ‘Shift class system’ and ‘Puppy love’, among others. Our students worked hard to prepare well despite feeling anxious or excited.
Having advanced to the finals, teams from our 7C and 8C tutor groups brought everyone a wonderful competition. Debaters on both sides launched a fierce ‘back and forth’ debate on the theme of ‘Economic globalization’. The debaters were quick thinking and logical, offering up a lot of sharp opinions. The audience was enthralled and captivated by the competition. We are sure that this will be a cherished memory for all.
Along with independent thinking, teamwork and healthy competitiveness could be observed. The children expressed themselves well, while remaining respectful and communicative. Everyone learned something new and truly enjoyed themselves.
In the end, 8C were the victors. A special mention goes to Tony Meng who claimed the Best Debater title, thanks to his quick thinking, calmness and humorous repartee. Congratulations Tony!
This is a key time for middle school students, when the desire to experience new things is particularly strong. With the new semester comes a new urge to question, to express one’s views, to explore one’s potential and to think more critically.
The opportunity to learn is everywhere, not just in the classroom. This was particularly evident during the debate competition when students showed their self-confidence and desire for self-improvement.
Like the wind and the waves, we too will rush forward towards the future. Let’s look forward to the next step together!
