After a wonderful first month at SUIS Qingpu, students have already embarked on their Grade 1 Primary School journey. The big questions were: Have they settled into their new academic surroundings? Did their classes impart a mix of enjoyment and enlightenment? Thankfully, the Parents’ Open Day shed light on many of these intriguing parent questions by giving unique insights into their child’s world, revealing the vibrant dynamics of their classrooms.
Chinese Language: The Pinyin Kingdom Adventure and the Joy of Reading and Writing
Guided by their instructors ‘Lion’ and ‘Dragon’, students embarked on their journey through the Pinyin Kingdom. Utilising nursery rhymes and rhythmic mnemonics, they were able to grasp the sounds and forms of ‘b’ and ‘p’. They wielded their ‘magic wands’ to craft characters and grasped the technique of merging two pinyin syllables through the theme of ‘making friends’. The lesson showcased a thoughtfully devised segment, allowing parents and children to immerse themselves in the joy of learning together within the Pinyin Kingdom.
Appreciating the Mysteries of Inquiry
English Language: Melodious Rules and Fun-Filled Learning
The classroom buzzed with energy as teachers and students created a vivacious learning atmosphere. English ‘raps’ became a medium for students to learn the class rules, and by singing, narrating, and enacting, students embraced classroom etiquette and the delight of learning English.
Bilingual Learning Subjects: A Kaleidoscope of Meaningful Learning Experiences
The weather has changed so fast lately! During our STEAM lesson, Mr. Lu introduced the students to thermometers, a common tool in our lives, and highlighted how to read the external temperature.
In our Inquiry sessions, we have been concentrating on the five senses of the human body. During the Parent Open Day session, we highlighted the sense of hearing, exploring a range of sounds and deliberating on their varying intensities.
In the Physical Education sessions, students were warmly invited to join in with the rallying call, ‘Let’s exercise together!’ Embodying the playful energy of ‘The Smurfs’, the children dashed energetically across the sports field. By mastering a variety of jumping techniques, they boosted their physical agility and jumping skills. Teamwork was encouraged through engaging games, ensuring that with every leap, students not only gained knowledge but also experienced sheer joy.
Quarter notes and half notes were the topic of the music lesson. ‘Do’ and ‘Sol’ were sneakily hidden; could they be heard? A hearty welcome was extended to the Grade 1 students and, as the lesson unfolded, they were encouraged to delve into the intricate world of music and connect deeply with its melodies.
In art class, we voyaged into the depths of the ocean. The students were able to engage in insightful discussions about marine life and subsequently crafted 3D starfish using clay.
Under the guidance and nurturing of their teachers, the students have begun to show steady progress. Through this Open Day, parents had a firsthand experience of their children’s Primary School journeys, sensing the steadfast commitment and dedication of SUIS Qingpu Campus teachers and the school’s quality of education. As we journey into the future, let us work together to ensure that our students reach their full potential.
