“Rat-a-tat-tat!” Autumn has come a-knocking! The primary school students at SUIS Qingpu finally went off on their Autumn Outing! The children were abuzz with excitement, eagerly speculating about the delightful experiences ahead, their laughter and happiness resonating merrily in the crisp autumn air.
The young students from Grades 1 and 2 visited Moon Lake Sculpture Park and Smurf Village. The children were treated to a variety of fun games in which they all gladly took part. They revelled in the freedom of the expansive green park, basking in the autumn sun, seeking signs of the season, and cherishing the joy of togetherness. This outing not only provided them with fun but also broadened their horizons and strengthened their friendships amidst the laughter.
Meanwhile, the older students from Grades 4 and 5 gathered at Happy Valley and Haichang Ocean Park, embarking on an outing filled with fun and exploration. In groups, they challenged themselves to try new things, gained wisdom, and embraced the thrills found in various amusement experiences, smiling all the time. The Grade 5 students marvelled at the vibrant tropical fish, majestic sharks, cuddly polar bears, and lively dolphins, fully immersing themselves in the enchanting world of marine life.
The Grade 3 students’ autumn outing was particularly seasonal, as students visited the Labour Practice Base for a unique practical journey entitled, “The Story of a Grain of Rice”. This experience combined scientific education on the growth cycle of rice, with a profound understanding of rural labour. At the outset, the students held hands, meticulously measuring every centimetre of the land beneath their feet. This seemingly simple task allowed them to appreciate the notion that “for every bowl of porridge and rice, one should remember its hard-won root.”
Following this, an impressive visual spectacle unfolded, with drones soaring overhead to perform agricultural tasks, showcasing the wonders of modern harvesting technology and impressing the students.
The most exhilarating part of the day arrived as the children rolled up their sleeves and carefully harvested rice with sickles. This traditional method not only expanded their perspectives but also brought immense joy, as rice panicles gradually accumulated in their hands, their faces lighting up with proud smiles. This was not merely physical labour; it was a profound dialogue between the soul and nature.
Furthermore, the children had the opportunity to create scarecrows, rice balls, and cook meals – activities they rarely try in their daily lives. Tasting the food they prepared with their own two hands provided a distinctly rewarding experience. Through such hands-on activities, the children not only gained understanding but also learned to cherish food.
Embracing the spirit of Autumn, our primary school students enjoyed the beautiful autumn days, filling their hearts with cherished memories of the season, labour, and friendship. We eagerly anticipate more colourful autumn stories to come!
