As the morning mist gently envelops the campus, the multi-storey buildings resonate with echoes of ancient heritage. Children chant classical verses, their rhythmic tones flowing like a radiant river of Chinese civilisation. At the heart of SUIS Qingpu Campus’s Han Culture curriculum, a vibrant series of immersive activities unfolded for students in grades 1 to 5, guiding them on a cultural journey where timeless wisdom is revitalised in their youthful minds.
Grade 1: Idiom Wonderland – Little Storytellers, Big Legacy
First Grade classrooms transformed into a whimsical “Idiom Wonderland.” Young learners took on the role of “Idiom Ambassadors,” using their lively voices and expressive gestures to bring stories like The Frog in the Well and The Fox Who Borrowed a Tiger’s Might to life. Their bright eyes and playful re-enactments transported their peers into vivid storytelling worlds. Top performers, crowned as “Idiom Stars,” toured classrooms as cultural ambassadors, inspiring a love for idiomatic language with each performance.
Second Grade students engaged in a dynamic “Speak-Read-Practice-Compete” learning cycle. Teachers, acting as storytellers, brought historical idioms to life through captivating audio narrations. During the “Idiom Challenge,” students eagerly shared their insights in timed presentations, while the “100 Stories” reading quest was interwoven with interactive games. This lively approach transformed the mastery of idioms into an adventure, igniting curiosity and deepening understanding.
Fourth Grade children competed in an intense “Chinese Knowledge Showdown.” Contestants tackled everything from character pronunciations to classical poetry analysis, striving for titles such as “Han Culture Champion” and “Ink Artistry Laureate.” The arena buzzed with individual brilliance and teamwork, each astute response met with enthusiastic cheers—a testament to their scholarly skills and shared spirit.
The scent of ink lingers in every classroom, and the essence of Han culture resonates in every heart. This cross-grade cultural journey, crafted by SUIS Qingpu Campus’ Han Culture Programme, was more than just an event—it was a meaningful conversation with history. By blending tradition with play, it allowed children to feel the warmth of their heritage while exploring its profound depth. Looking ahead, the school will continue to reinvent classical education, ensuring that ancient roots flourish anew in young minds and passing China’s cultural legacy to the next generation.
