Code with Purpose: Inside the Grade 9 App Showcase

A Showcase of Innovation, Compassion, and Impact

What happens when 15-year-olds are challenged to solve real-world problems with code? At Shanghai United International School Qingpu Campus, the result was a groundbreaking, six-week journey into creativity, purpose, and digital innovation.

The Mission: Use Python to Solve a Global Problem

Grade 9 students embarked on a six-week Project-Based Learning (PBL) experience in Computer Science. Their challenge? Build a fully functional Python GUI app to address an urgent environmental issue—air pollution, food insecurity, biodiversity, climate change, or water scarcity.

From Idea to Impact: A Six-Week Journey

Week 1 – Problem Discovery

Students explored real-world environmental challenges and chose the issues they cared most about.

Week 2 – Human-Centered Design

They learned about user experience design, sketched interfaces, and imagined real user needs.

Week 3 – Coding with Tkinter

Using Python and Tkinter, they brought interfaces to life and built interactive logic.

Week 4 – Building Logic & Data Systems

Students added conditionals, loops, and file handling to make their apps smart and practical.

Week 5 – Testing, Feedback & Polish

They refined features and UI, rehearsed presentations, and prepared for the showcase.

Week 6 – Pitch Day

Each student presented their app’s social impact and technical achievements to judges and parents.

Real Solutions, Real Learning

From carbon footprint calculators to water usage trackers and food security awareness apps, every product came with a message: “We care, and we can code.”

“This wasn’t just an exercise in coding. It was a test of empathy, design thinking, and real-world application.”

—— Mr. Lamba, Computer Science Teacher

Spotlight: Best App Award Winner

Lucy Lu took home the Best App Award for her clean, functional, and meaningful application that tackled Endangered Species. Judges praised her UI design, structured logic, and real-world relevance.

Student Reflections

“This was my first time building an app on my own, and it was a completely new and unforgettable experience for me. We had only six weeks to complete our Python app and prepare a presentation—it was a tight deadline, but I learned so much through this challenge.”

—— Jason Wan

“Building my ‘Extreme Weather Report’ app was a tough challenge since I had never made an app before. But through lots of research and effort, I turned my ideas into reality. This project helped me develop skills in UI/UX design, Python coding, and public speaking. It really strengthened my problem-solving and creative thinking.”

—— Lester Ding

“Before this project, I never thought I could build a complete app on my own. It felt like such a big task at first, but with the support of my teacher and persistent effort, I overcame many challenges. I’ve grown so much from this experience—not only in coding but also in confidence.”

—— Daniel Chen

“Through this project and presentation, I learned so much—not just about coding concepts like loops and iterations, but also about patience and perseverance. I explored the Pillow library and discovered how to solve problems creatively. This experience made me a better thinker and programmer.”

—— Ken Huang

“This unit helped me learn many new things. I never knew I could build an app from scratch, but I did it! I also learned how to present my ideas clearly, and how to solve problems in real life. Most of all, it helped me become more confident.”

—— Cheng Liu

“This project taught me more than coding—I overcame my fear of public speaking. Presenting my app in front of a large audience was a big step for me, and I’m proud that I did it. I now understand what it means to be a real coder and how challenging, yet rewarding coding can be.”

—— Francis Xiang

“Throughout this project, I learned how to use Python to build an app, and how AI could help me solve problems. I asked AI for help designing buttons, inserting pictures, and making a presentation. I also practiced public speaking and making a PowerPoint. It was an amazing learning experience.”

—— Candy Xu

“Creating my app during this project was something I never imagined I could do before. It was my first time using Python to build an app completely on my own, and I learned a lot—from writing code to adding images. I felt confident during my presentation, and I believe I will do even better in the future.”

—— Lucy Lu

“Working on this app and presentation was a real breakthrough for me. I built the app independently and used AI to help guide me through coding challenges. I even made some mistakes during my pitch, but that just motivated me to improve. I know I’ve grown from this experience.”

—— Kerwin Luan

What Our Judges Said

Dr. Adam Neufield

“I loved listening to the presentations and was inspired by the students’ energy and passion for making the world better. You showed leadership and compassion whether your app focused on people, animals, or the environment. Keep exploring, take risks, and learn from failures and successes. I’m confident you’ll make great contributions to your country and the world.”

Miss Kamila Bekshentayeva

“Thank you to Mr. Sushil and the Grade 9 team for this wonderful event and inviting me to be a judge. I was impressed by the students’ dedication and creativity in solving environmental challenges. Students, remember to clearly state your problem and give research background. Also, consider how to protect your apps from future cyber-attacks.”

Dr. Scott Milne

“It was a pleasure to be invited as a judge for this inspiring showcase. I was deeply impressed by the students’ innovative and user-friendly apps, each designed to address critical environmental challenges. Their passion, clear presentations, and ability to explain complex coding concepts demonstrated not only technical skill but also a strong commitment to sustainability.”
