I. The Foundation of Education: Starting with Passion, Rooted in Professionalism
In her teaching, Ms. Shirley delves deeply into textbooks and curriculum standards, breaking down knowledge points into ‘small questions’ that students can easily understand. She avoids a lecture-only approach, using group discussions and cooperative inquiry to stimulate students’ deep thinking. For example, when teaching ‘units of length,’ she takes students to measure the classroom using their ‘body rulers.’ When discussing ‘water conservation,’ she has students work in groups to conduct surveys and calculate data, turning abstract mathematical knowledge into visible, tangible practice.
In her professional development, she has never ceased in her pursuit of growth. Selected for the Qingpu District Key Mathematics Teachers Training Programme to refine her teaching abilities, she delves deeply into educational research with a special-grade teacher team, actively participating in Ministry of Education and Shanghai municipal research projects (project-based learning practice). She has also led two research projects at the district and municipal levels. From classroom teaching to research projects, from paper publications to contributing to books, she uses one achievement after another to interpret the essence of a ‘professional teacher.’

II. The Warmth of Educating: Hiding “Love” in Every Detail
In her view, education should be a subtle process, like ‘moistening things silently.’ When she notices a student feeling down, she quietly slips them an encouraging note. When she sees minor conflicts between classmates, she patiently guides them to see things from the other’s perspective. During class activities, she intentionally creates opportunities for introverted children to showcase themselves.
‘Equality, respect, and care’ are her unchanging principles for treating students. She develops personalised tutoring plans for students with weaker foundations and accompanies advanced students in exploring extended knowledge, allowing every child to find their own strengths and shine.

Professional Development: Using Research Methods to Solve Teaching Challenges
In the realm of educational research, she is a true ‘pathfinder,’ unafraid to venture and experiment. Guided by the school’s national-level project, ‘Research on Teacher Professional Development Based on Project-Based Learning,’ she has integrated project-based learning with primary school mathematics. Through her research, she has achieved a series of impressive results:

Words from Colleagues: She is a “Glimmer” and the “Warm Sun” on the Educational Path
Coordinator Ms Vicky
In her role as grade level leader, her high sense of responsibility and reliable approach have not only won the trust of colleagues but also serve as crucial support for the steady progress of grade level work. She is a particularly respected and beloved leader.
In communicating with parents, Ms Shirley consistently maintains empathy and approachability. She patiently listens to and understands parents’ concerns, communicates with the sincerity of a friend, always prioritises each child’s growth, and safeguards their development with genuine care.
Grade 3 Math Representative Mr Bill
Throughout her pregnancy and the period following, she maintained her exceptional work ethic—leading with resilience, upholding high standards, and continuing to guide students with unwavering commitment.
Being part of her team is truly a privilege; her leadership and passion make her an invaluable asset to our school community.
Working Hand in Hand, Walking Alongside the Light
In daily life, she is the ‘caring older sister’ always available at a moment’s notice. Whether it’s work troubles or life’s trivial matters, her comfort always revives one’s spirits. It’s a privilege to walk alongside such light.
Whenever we recall our child’s growth and transformation over these years, our hearts are always filled with infinite gratitude to you.
Our child used to lack confidence in mathematics, often shying away from challenges. Under your patient guidance and continuous encouragement, he has not only gradually dared to ask questions and become willing to try, but has also started taking on roles within groups, expressing opinions, and even proactively organising classmates to solve problems together. To have encountered a teacher like you, who possesses both philosophy and the power to act, is an immense blessing for our entire family.
I still remember the first semester of first grade. As a new student’s mother, I was very anxious, worried that my child wouldn’t keep up with the school’s pace. Ms Shirley told me not to worry, that the child’s character comes first, followed by academic success. She paid attention to the child’s personality development, guiding her on how to establish a sense of ‘self’ within the collective. While adhering to rigorous and serious teaching principles, she also focused on the child’s physical and mental development. She is a homeroom teacher who truly keeps every child in her heart.
Ms Shirley’s slim frame contains immense energy. She is a meticulous guardian of her students and is often seen striding purposefully through the school, calmly managing numerous tasks. For the children, Ms Shirley is a strict teacher, but even more so a caring mother, their strong ‘backing’ at school. Parents often express with emotion: How fortunate we are to have met such a wonderful teacher during our children’s primary school years!
From the classroom to research, from educating others to providing leadership, she is like a ‘beacon of gentle light’ on the educational path—without a dazzling halo, yet using day-after-day perseverance and love to pass light and warmth to her students, also illuminating the path for more fellow travellers. And this ‘glimmer’ is precisely the most moving power of education.
